Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How long is the race?
A. That depends! Smart teams who plan out their route in advance will probably save themselves some extra miles. A rough estimate would be as follows:
Short Course (2-8hrs): Foot 5-7 miles; Bike 15-20 miles
Long Course (4-8hrs): Foot 5-10 miles; Bike 25-45 miles
We shake our heads every time we see teams who do not TAKE THE TIME to plan out their route in advance. We know you are excited to get going. Your heart is beating fast; your adrenaline is rushing; you don’t want to lose any time to other teams. But do yourself a huge favor…read through all of the directions THOROUGHLY. In fact, read them twice. You will save yourself much heartache later. We promise.
Q. Where does the race start and finish?
A. The Race will begin and end at the race headquarters at North Pointe Aquatic Center ( 335 Holloway Rd. Ballwin, MO 63021)
Q. How hard is this race?
A. This short course race is designed such that anyone in reasonable health can complete them. We plan them out so that our mothers could finish them if they wanted to. Many teams have finished the entire race without running one step. It takes them close to 8 hours, but they also tend to have the most fun.
Q. What do we get for our entry fee?
A. The best value in adventure racing anywhere! Each teammate gets an event technical t-shirt, a post-race meal, and a SUPER fun race for a little more than the cost of a standard 10K running race.
Q. What kind of bike do I need?
A. Road bikes are the best option but mountain bikes will work too.
Q. How young can a “family team member” be?
A. We did not define an age. Your team will be mapping out its own course to get to each checkpoint so a participant must be comfortable riding on the streets. If you have 3 adults on your team, you must register for the adult short or long course, even if you are related. The family team is only offered for youth wanting to participate in the event with a parent or guardian.
Q. Will there be food/water/bathrooms on the course?
A. Yes and no. We will not provide you with food and water along the course. Adventure Races are “self-supported” and that would take away part of the challenge! On the other hand, there are tons of convenience and grocery stores in the city. You can stop at any one of them to grab a quick snack or drink. Bring some cash. Water fountains are located at many parks. We encourage you not to rely on convenience stores and water fountains though. Make sure you have water bottles and snacks with you. Bathrooms will be at headquarters but make stops as you need them.…
Q. I’ve never done an adventure race before. How often should I eat and drink? I have a hard time exercising on a full stomach.
A. One of the biggest mistakes teams make in adventure racing is with their nutrition; that is, they do not eat and drink enough. Top teams sip a beverage every 15 minutes and eat some calories (solid or liquid) every 30 minutes. Do yourself a favor and avoid “energy drinks” (i.e.- those with stimulants) before and during the race.
Endurance athletes will usually drink water and/or sports drink during races. They will eat primarily carbohydrate-based foods, such as Fig Newtons and energy bars/gels. Trail mix works great too. Don’t try a new food on race day!
Q. What gear is required?
A. Each team must have the following: a compass, a writing utensil, a bicycle and helmet for each teammate, and 1 working cellular telephone per team.
Q. Do we need bike locks?
A. This is up to you. They are not required and we will have staff supervising the gear areas. However, we cannot be responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items.
Q. Will you provide maps? Can we bring our own?
A. We will provide you with a city map. Yes, you may also bring your own but no GPS systems.
Q. Can we take a Taxi or Bus?
A. No.
Q. Are there cut-off times for the event?
A. Yep, we’ve got to go home at some point! The Short Course and Long Course cut-off times are 8 hours (4:00 p.m.).
Q. Will you cancel the race due to weather?
A. This is an adventure race that will be held rain or shine. However, if severe weather threatens, we may be forced to cancel the event. Please be aware that we cannot offer refunds if this occurs. To check the status of the event, call the weather hotline at 636 227-8950 after 7am on race day.
