September 2019 Member of the Month: Matthew McRoy

Aug 30, 2019 | The Pointe

Matthew and his family have been members for about four years, but he has been coming to The Pointe since he was in middle school. He is currently a junior at Maryville University majoring in Cyber Security getting real life experience in the field at Maryville’s Cyber Fusion Center.

Growing up Matthew did not have a lot of interest in physical fitness although he did play football through 8th grade. Due to concussion symptoms, he did give up the sport. After a few years, his doctor informed him that he had become pre-diabetic which completely changed his attitude toward physical fitness. Since he was a junior in high school he has made fitness a priority and has lost 60 pounds during that time.

Matthew likes working out at The Pointe because it has a community feel. He has met and continues to meet new friends. He also likes the relaxed, friendly approach from staff. When being interviewed for this feature, he saw and pointed out Ken McAdams, one of The Pointe’s custodians, and mentioned how he has been a motivational source as Ken can be seen regularly working out and is happy to share encouraging words.

Matthew would like all members and potential members to know that when coming to The Pointe, you can be yourself. He explains, “Don’t be intimidated by equipment or other members, we are here to help.”
