April's Member of the Month: Betsy Kaempfe

Apr 10, 2018 | The Pointe

Some people think they live “boring” lives. “I don’t do a lot of exciting things,” claimed this month’s member of the month. But it’s often these unsuspecting people who make a quiet difference to those around them. Which is the case for April’s Member of the Month Betsy Kaempfe and is exactly why she was nominated.

Although she would rather be outside than inside for almost any activity she is doing, Betsy became a member of The Pointe eight years ago to be able to walk indoors. She is an early bird, and when it’s dark outside it can lead to unsafe conditions which she unfortunately found out after falling and breaking her arm on an early morning walk eight years ago.

Now she comes to The Pointe every morning at 5:15 a.m. during the week. And The Pointe staff can attest, she is ready and waiting for the doors to be unlocked Monday-Friday. “I walk and talk. And laugh, it’s so much fun here,” said Kaempfe. She started walking when her kids were young. She would push them in the stroller and said she never got out of the habit. She has always loved her daily walks.

28 years working in for the Rockwood Food Service got her used to early mornings. Even though she’s retired now, she still remains very much a morning person, getting up at 3:30 a.m. each day. “It’s just a habit from my working days. I can get a lot done in the mornings,” she said.

A big part of her early morning walking routine is the people she walks with. The friendships that have formed with the people she walks with mean a lot to her. “I love the people here. I just like that you can visit, and you can do that while you’re walking. And more people are always welcome.”

When she’s not at The Pointe, Betsy is often seen in her favorite place—outdoors.  “I read outside, I work in the yard, I love mowing the lawn, or shoveling the drive ways in the neighborhood in the winter. I like walking outside during the day and talking to neighbors on my porch.” Her advice to others is, “Get outside! And keep moving.”

Betsy was married 44 years to her late husband Lloyd and has two kids and two grandkids. She has lived in Ballwin for the last 47 years and has no plans to leave. “It’s like coming from a small town but it has everything, schools, churches, grocery stores. It’s just perfect.”

Congratulations on being named April’s Member of the Month Betsy. We appreciate your personality and the way you naturally form friendships with the people around you at The Pointe.
