History of the Pointe

The Pointe at Ballwin Commons opened in July 1996. It is anticipated approximately 170,000 visitors are served each year. The 2,000-square-foot leisure pool is a favorite component for all ages. This particular element was added due to citizen interest and to provide a source of revenue. Construction on Phase II, the 2,200 square foot indoor leisure pool, began in February, 1996 after passage of a 1/2 cent capital improvements sales tax in November, 1995. With high schools in the area offering competitive swimming elements, the citizen's committee realized the need to provide recreational swimming and a building component that could generate revenue and help recover the cost of operating the entire center. The pool includes a two story water slide, lazy river current channel, whirlpool spa, interactive water playground, vortex, three 25 yard lap lanes, and sundeck. Total cost for the leisure pool phase was $3,155,000. The two-story atrium lobby of The Pointe is filled with natural light from the signature pyramid architectural feature.

Ballwin has always maintained a fee differential for resident vs. non-resident use, and the community center is no exception. Non-resident fees are more than resident charges for admission to all recreation facilities and programs. Staff anticipates that 80% of the center's $750,000.00 operating budget will be realized through the sale of annual passes, 20 visit punch cards, and daily admission fees. Corporate membership discounts are made available to local business. Ms. Terri Byatt, Citizen's Design Committee member, commented that, "even though a fee is required to participate in the more active areas of the building, the facility was designed with an openness that allows visitors to observe activities and feel they are part of the action without paying the price of admission. The Pointe has made Ballwin and even more desirable place to live, as reflected in the number of annexation requests we have had".
