Public Works & Parks Maintenance FacilitiesThe Public Works Facility and the Parks Maintenance Facility is currently undergoing renovations to add in more space and bring the facilities up to current standards. The current Public Works facility was constructed in 1968. The Parks Maintenance facility was built in 1984. Both facilities are running out of space and deteriorating and in need of updating. There also needs to be canopy storage, and vehicle storage to help prolong the life of current vehicles and to allow for storage of materials. The City will use $4.8 from the City’s infrastructure fund to pay for the renovations. There will be no impact on the general fund reserve, no debt and taxes will not increase. The Board of Aldermen were presented with several options both in the current space (at the edge of Vlasis Park) and at other sites outside of Vlasis Park across the City. Relocating the facility would cost an estimated $18 million dollars, and require at least an acre. There were no such properties available that were within the City’s budget. The Board voted in February 2024 to go with option B, which transferred the Parks Maintenance facility space to Public Works and added in a new building in part of the parking lot for the former police station. The rest of the former police station property will be returned to park space, adding more green space to Vlasis Park. After an RFQ process, the City brought in Navigate, Archimages, and CEDC in May 2024 to lead the project. The construction contract with BEX Construction was approved by the Board in April of 2025. The project is expected to be completed by next Spring. |
